Pre-assembly of partition wall systems for armored vehicles

How Zettl's precise module assembly enabled a manufacturer of civilian protection vehicles to achieve stable processes without the need for additional personnel

A man in work clothes assembles a metal frame for partition wall systems with a drill in a modern industrial workshop.

Initial situation

A manufacturer of civilian protection vehicles wanted to start a new project without having to hire its own staff at short notice. The partition wall systems between the driver and passenger compartments consisted of several pre-assembled individual parts such as steel frames, protective panels, viewing windows, electronic brackets and prepared cable ducts. The assembly had to be precisely pre-assembled to ensure a perfect fit in the vehicle.

The challenge

Internal capacities were fully utilized and additional training of new employees would have delayed the project. The complex assembly required a high degree of precision, as fit and function are directly relevant to safety. In addition, assembly quality and documentation had to be consistently guaranteed.

Solution

We carried out the complete pre-assembly at our site - including incoming goods inspection, assembly of the reinforced frame, integration of the protective plates and the viewing window as well as preparation of all fixing points and cable ducts. Finally, a functional and fit test was carried out using a customer-specific test gauge.

Result

The pre-assembled modules could be used by the customer without reworking. This eliminated the need for personnel training and significantly reduced the throughput time per vehicle. In addition, the tested modules minimized sources of error in the final assembly, which led to greater process reliability.

Conclusion

Shorter cycle times thanks to pre-assembled modules

No increase in staff despite new project

31 % lower process costs thanks to outsourced pre-assembly
